SPECIAL FEATURE:
RAYMOND SCOTT COVER

Producing the artwork for this new recording of Raymond Scott music, on the BASTA label, rates as one of the best commissions I've ever had.

Raymond Scott (1908-94) is best known as the composer of tunes such as Powerhouse, War Dance for Wooden Indians and In an 18th Century Drawing Room. These tightly constructed musical novelties were performed by The Raymond Scott Quintette in the 1930's.

The Chesterfield Arrangements are variations of these compositions as performed by Paul Whiteman's Chesterfield Orchestra on his CBS radio show at the end of the 30's.

This album features new recordings of the Paul Whiteman arrangements, recorded by the Dutch Metropole Orchestra, featuring The Beau Hunks Saxtette. The album was produced by Beau Hunk Gert-Jan Blom, art direction was by Piet Schreuders, executive producer was Jeroen van der Schaaf of BASTA, and Will Friedwald provided extensive sleevenotes.

The Beau Hunks, led by bassist, researcher, and producer Mr. Blom, researcher Mr. Schreuders and BASTA executives Messrs. Jeroen and Theo van der Schaaf, have attained worldwide fame with their new recordings of not only Raymond Scott music, but also the music of other American composers LeRoy Shield, composer of Laurel and Hardy/Our Gang music, Ferde Grofé, composer and arranger to the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, and Edward MacDowell.

Gert-Jan Blom calls the Beau Hunks a "documentary orchestra". The size of the group varies from project to project. Mr. Blom previously led the Boulevard of Broken Dreams Orchestra on its glorious three album melancholy journey through American sad songs in the eighties.

As well as designing all of the Beau Hunks album covers, Piet Schreuders is a dedicated researcher of all matters related to Raymond Scott, LeRoy Shield, Laurel and Hardy and more. He publishes an occasional magazine called Furore, which makes free use of the English and Dutch languages in exploring his many interests. He has also published books on graphic design, Dell paperback covers, and The Beatles. Recently he contributed an in-depth article on the paperback art of James Avati to issue 1 of Illustration Magazine.

In London I once spotted Furore magazine at the ICA bookshop.

Jeroen and Theo van der Schaaf's BASTA label has released not just Beau Hunks projects, but also original Raymond Scott recordings, including his later pioneering electronic music, Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman's Theremin recordings, André Popp, Fay Lovsky, and all kinds of other curious things. BASTA album covers have featured art by, amongst others, Robert Crumb, Chris Ware, Ever Meulen, Robert Armstrong and Joost Swarte.
